LIBA LIBA HOUSEBOATS ACHIEVE ECOTOURISM CERTIFICATION

Liba Liba Houseboats, which are based in Renmark, South Australia, are pleased to announce that they are the first houseboats to achieve Eco Certified Nature Tourism accreditation in Australia, with Ecotourism Australia. Not only were Liba Liba Houseboats the first hire/drive fleet on the Murray River, but also are also now recognised as the most Eco friendly houseboats. The houseboat fleet started in 1962 and are now the largest paddlewheel fleet on the River. All the boats are driven by Paddlewheels which makes them very safe, economical and environmentally friendly.

We attended an Ecotourism workshop in March 2003, in Renmark, which made us realise we were already doing a lot of the things that were required to receive the Nature Based Certification. We decided to pursue it further and started working on our submission, which was completed in July 2003. As Houseboats had never been considered before in Ecotourism, it opened up a lot of questions that we didn’t fit into, so took 12 months to finalise our Certification.

Ecotourism Certification means that our guests have the information available to them to be fully aware of how to have as minimal effect on our natural environment as possible, whilst having their usual houseboat holiday. It also provides information on National Parks, wildlife, how nature built the river and cultural information.

We look forward to helping other houseboat companies to becoming Eco Certified, as this will increase people’s awareness of the little things they can do to improve the health of our great river.

Liba Liba has also rebuilt & up dated numerous houseboats in the fleet. This has been achieved in time for our Christmas, and future, guests enjoyment and comfort.

The hardest decision you will have to make is whether to head up or down stream or moor in front of the main shopping centre and enjoy the amenities and nightlife of Renmark.

The kitchen is fantastic; microwave, gas cooker, fridge, dishwasher and well stocked with all the crockery and cutlery necessary for a BBQ or gourmet meal. Liba Liba can even organize your groceries and drinks for you.

The beds are comfy for that afternoon nap, or just lying in the sun and reading a good book as the river drifts by. It’s surprisingly easy to get into the habit of going to bed at dusk and rising at dawn.

The houseboat comes equipped with steamy hot showers, television, video, CD/radio and even a washing machine, in fact everything you could possibly need. Gas heating and air conditioning guarantee a cosy ride in winter and a cool, comfortable environment in summer. It really is a home away from home.
